Snow Adventure - Advent Day 4

December5

I had a great adventure in the snow today, but it didn’t do my cold any good, leaving my with painful sinuses all evening (and the associated headache and dizziness that comes with it). So rather than write much more, simply follow me on my few hour long journey around Durham in the snow. A journey that involved snowballs, snowmen and snowboarding. Excitement!

Cold Airfield – Advent Day 3

December3

Already the one-a-day writing schedule is pushing me - not because I don’t have anything to say, but more because I seem to remember I need to write something scant minutes before midnight, then remember that the edit function on my blog currently doesn’t work. Today we had more snow, saw lots of people falling over and two ambulances on a bridge. My observation therefore is that whilst as a kid snow means fun, games and potentially days off school, the harsh reality of life suggests that wishing for it to happen is not all that good an idea. However there is still something intrinsically great about it, and what we have had the past two days leaves me wishing for some heavier snow, a decent sledge and to be up Aidan’s hill. Roll on the blizzard!

Snow - Advent Day 2

December2

So today we had some more snow in Durham. Not really amazing stuff – it wasn’t very thick and it had all melted by the afternoon, but it did make the place look very nice (if even more obscenely cold) on the way to the department this morning. We then got some more snow this evening, and this time my camera actually had enough battery to take a photo of it.

Advent Day 1

December1

I decided that as a bit of incentive to post more on this blog that I’d try and make a post each day of advent. Advent is a special time leading up to Christmas, and for Christians is a time to focus on the gift we all received and the reason why Christmas is still celebrated over 2000 years later. For everyone else its also a time of preparation, but usually for more mundane reasons – stocking up on food, buying presents etc. Not that I don’t do the latter (I have already purchased a Christmas present and eaten two mince pies) but as with most public holidays amongst the fun and stuff I enjoy there’s always something that irks me. So each day I intend to post a brief thought, as well as a nice photo (because its also a rather beautiful if cold time of year).

Unfortunately I’m actually ill today and really need to get to bed, so I’m using stuff from yesterday.

Today’s thought is a brief quote I came up with yesterday whilst in church and thinking on a discussion I’d had earlier in the week.

Religion should not require action, but it should inspire it.

This photo is from a walk with my mum yesterday in some woods near where we live (any of the Bury summer crew will recognise it as a frequent spot of expeditions during the holidays). It was very nice and Autumnal, and we clearly had a lot of ways to chose from.

Because Northerners know little of Rain

Common Sense Fail

Yeah, never rains here, wouldn't know what it did to benches. Typical Yorkshire if you ask me!
